The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames has appointed developer Countryside as its preferred partner for a 2,000 home regeneration of the Cambridge Road Estate.
Cambridge Road Estate is Kingston's largest regeneration programme, aiming to deliver new homes over the next 10-12 years, including more social housing, better community facilities and outdoor spaces.
Councillor Liz Green, leader of Kingston Council, said: "This is great news and an important step in the process to making the regeneration of Cambridge Road Estate a reality. Over the next few months, we intend to work with residents to ensure they are fully informed and can play a major role in the masterplanning process."
The masterplanning process will begin in the spring and will include the overall design of the development including properties, landscaping, public transport and open spaces.
These proposals will be subject to a positive resident ballot, planned for autumn 2019, which will be one of the first since the mayor of London has made it a requirement for grant funding.
Graham Cherry, chief executive of Countryside Partnerships South, said: "We are thrilled to have been selected and look forward to working with Kingston Council on the next stage of the procurement process to finalise the contracts for this vitally important project. We have been impressed with the level of commitment from the council and residents in conducting this competitive process."
