Durkan is a financially independent, family owned, developer and contractor which invests in, develops and refurbishes homes in communities throughout London and the home counties. What brings it to Sitematch 2018?
Why are you taking part in Sitematch 2018?
No other event of its kind gives us the opportunity to sit face-to-face with the people we need to at local authorities. Every Sitematch event has delivered for us and we have come away with new relationships and stronger existing ones. Our investment in Sitematch is worth every penny and it has always been influential on our work going forward.
How do you think your participation in Sitematch London will benefit Durkan?
It is the best information gathering event we attend, and informative on what local authorities need from us to help deliver the homes they need themselves. The authorities are armed with their delivery targets and a plan that supports it. They know what land is available and who we should talk to. I come away with some great contacts and all from a 15-minute meeting.
On what projects is Durkan currently working in Britain?
We have some really exciting projects, especially with public sector partners. We completed a state-of-the-art Junior School for Putney (funded by a development of apartments), we're working with Aylesbury Vale District Council to deliver shops, homes and public realm amenities; and we are coming to the end of our jewel in the crown scheme at the Royal Military Academy in Greenwich, where we have started selling apartments in the Grade II-listed part of the scheme.
What are you looking to discuss with local authorities at Sitematch?
Easy answer! Where are the opportunities to deliver in their borough and what do they need from us to help them reach their objectives? We are a partner and we want to work with them from start to finish. If a borough doesn't have a plan it wouldn't be at Sitematch, so we go there to listen.
What are some of the qualities that make a local authority attractive to work with?
Local authorities focus on more than just land value. Those that we work with have always been interested in the place, the community and the positive impact of development on the local area. Of course the price is important, however what is more important is how authorities improve the environment of where people live, work and play. It means we can look at the real value of a project beyond just land price.
