The Sitematch London team catches up with Ian Rae, Hackney Councilís head of planning to discuss what the borough has to offer at the next Sitematch London event on 10 February 2016.
Can you say something about your role and responsibilities at the council?
I joined the London Borough of Hackney in May 2015 as head of planning. My role has brought together the spatial planning and development management functions of the council, as well as building control. The planning service now includes a growth team, specialising in major planning applications, urban design and site delivery.
Are there any specific development types Hackney is looking to stimulate?
The borough is seeking schemes of high architectural design, which match the council's key priorities, including mixed-use schemes in its town centres and employment-led developments in its priority employment areas, including Tech City.
What are the key development opportunities in the borough?
The council is currently preparing a masterplan and delivery strategy for Hackney Central, which includes a broad range – highly deliverable development opportunities on sites both within the council and private ownership. A number of sites in other key growth areas are also approaching delivery stage following allocation in the Dalston, Hackney Wick and Manor House Area Action Plans. The council is also currently in the process of identifying suitable opportunity sites in emerging Area Action Plans for Shoreditch and Stamford Hill.
Why is the council attending Sitematch - what are their objectives?
As well as an opportunity to have preliminary discussions with the development industry about specific sites. The council also sees Sitematch as a useful platform to showcase its planning objectives for the borough and its new Planning Service, including a pre-application service, Planning Performance Agreement (PPA) framework and integrated building control service.
Why should a Sitematch delegate book a meeting with Hackney?
In addition to finding out more about Hackney's 'end to end' planning service, delegates will be able to understand more about the unique development opportunities in one of London's most dynamic boroughs.
