Budget 2015: housebuilding options explored

Thu 26th March 2015, 5:16 pm

Chancellor George Osborne has revealed in his budget speech that the University of York has been appointed to undertake a study exploring the feasibility of the government directly commissioning the building of new homes.

The study will also take into account the economic impact of homes being built under direct contract of the government.

The chancellor made the statement with regards to a housing development in Northstowe, where a pilot scheme is currently underway. Around half of the site is developed using conventional methods, and the other half allows for the Homes and Communities agency to directly contract a housebuilder.

According to the budget statement, using the new model has the potential to double the rate at which new homes are built on surplus public land.
