In the early spring sunshine, Team Sitematch London set off on the Broadgate Cycle to MIPIM charity challenge this morning (5 March). It is a 932-mile bicycle ride from London to Cannes, France, where participants will then join up with delegates at the MIPIM property event on 10 March.

Named after the 3Fox International-organised property event at The Shard, Team Sitematch London consists of 14 riders, including: economic development and environment at Hounslow Council; Brendon Walsh, assistant director of regeneration and planning at Ealing Council, Lucy Taylor; and 3Fox managing director, Toby Fox.

Team Sitematch London is one of seven teams, comprising 104 riders, cycling to raise tens of thousands for charity Cycle To.

Dr Carol Homden, Coram’s chief executive, addressed the cyclists as they prepared for take-off. She said: “Never before have so many ridden so far, for so much difference. There are children for whom your achievements are unimaginable, who are depending on you and whose lives are going to be changed forever, as a result of what you are about to do. And that’s to say nothing of how much your own lives are going to be changed forever by what you’re about to do!

“Go riders, make your difference, do well – all get safely down to Cannes and I’m going to be there to welcome you all in.”

For Fox, the personal challenge is to better the 70 miles a day he achieved in 2014. He said: “It's exciting to be sponsoring a team this year. I took part in the ride last year for the first time and it changed my life. It's a real challenge but it's a real pleasure to be raising money for such a great cause. The sponsors have been incredibly generous and we’re proud to be carrying their names down to MIPIM.”

Taylor said: "I’ve been at MIPIM for the last few years and watched the cyclists finish this mammoth ride with huge smiles on their faces and a massive sense of achievement. I hope to feel like that too, as well as raising money for Coram – a fantastic charity working with disadvantaged children – and meet some new friends in the property industry.

"The training has been tough through the winter – getting up for a 6.30am start and cycling in the ice and snow – fingers crossed for the sun to shine on the road to south of France."

Walsh is a veteran of the Cycle to challenge, and will be taking part for the fifth time. He said: "My good mate Toby Fox was desperate to do [the challenge] again and I was worried he might fail to make it down to Cannes if I wasn’t there to give him a push up the final hill"

In all seriousness though, it’s a fantastic networking opportunity with senior property professionals and its for a great cause."

A2Dominion is among the sponsors for Walsh, Hayes and Taylor.

Darrell Mercer, A2Dominion's chief executive, said: “We’re pleased to support Pat Hayes, Lucy Taylor and Brendon Walsh as they undertake this exciting and  challenging cycle ride to the south of France. Their journey will raise valuable funds for one of the UK’s oldest children’s charities, Coram, which is committed to improving the lives of vulnerable children and young people.”
