Islington areas to be exempt from office to resi

Fri 3rd October 2014, 9:55 am

Islington Council has come to an agreement with the government to exempt certain areas in the borough from regulations which allow for office space to be converted to residential units without planning permission.

Initially all areas in Islington would not be exempt, but following the council's threat of a judicial review, the government has agreed to exempt certain key areas of the borough.

Councillor James Murray, executive member for housing and development, said: “The government’s initial decision to block us was wrong, and we were right to challenge it. I’m pleased that we have been able to have a constructive dialogue in recent weeks and reach an agreement which protects the most important clusters, businesses and charities in the borough.”

Areas in Islington to become exempt from the regulations include: King’s Cross and York Way, Angel and Upper Street, Holloway Road, Finsbury Park, Seven Sisters Road, Hornsey Road and Archway.
