The government has appointed Simon Ridley, currently a director at the Department for Communities and Local Government, as the new chief executive of the Planning Inspectorate.

Ridley’s background is in finance, working previously at HM Treasury working on public spending, growth and productivity.

He will take over from Sir Michael Pitts in July 2014.

Ridley said: "I am delighted to take up this opportunity to build on the work of Sir Michael’s leadership and lead an organisation that is integral to ensuring a swift planning system is in place for all, from individual residents through to major corporations.

"I look forward to taking up this role in the summer and working with all the teams in the inspectorate."
