Pickles calls for council tax freeze

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has called on local authorities to take up the government’s offer of extra funding to freeze council tax.
The government is providing £550 million in grants to help local authorities freeze or reduce council tax, which on average more than doubled between 1997 and 2010.
Figures published by the Department for Communities and Local Government show that so far 137 authorities have indicated they will be freezing their bills in 2014/15.
Pickles said: "Council tax became a big worry for those trying to balance family budgets. This government has been working to give families greater financial security, taking action to keep council tax down."
