This week, Stuart Spence, commercial advisor at Hyde Housing, tells Sitematch UK about a surprising encounter with a burglar and a crucial goalline clearance from his footballing youth.
1) If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go and why?
Thailand – I have been fortunate enough to travel across Europe and South America on separate occasions and fully enjoyed both trips. But Thailand is the one place that I would really like to see that I haven’t got round to visiting yet. I love my food so anywhere that serves up tasty dinners is always attractive and where better to eat Thai food than in Thailand!
2) What is your most memorable sporting moment? Why was it so memorable?
Growing up in Northern Ireland I played in an under 11s football team. My memorable sporting moment came in the final of the Under 11 cup. I blocked a shot on the line in injury time to keep the score at 1-1. We went on to win 2-1 after extra time and I took the credit for keeping us in the game! It shows how sparse my sporting achievements have been that I have to go back over 20 years to find a memorable moment!
3) Which book or film has had the biggest influence on your life and why?
I don’t know if any book or film has influenced my life significantly, but the books I have enjoyed reading the most would be The Stars' Tennis Balls by Stephen Fry and The Secret History by Donna Tart. I’m not a massive film buff but I think if I had to choose a favourite it would probably be The Game.
4 Which famous person would you most like to go out for meal with and why?
I’d love the chance to have a chat with Lord Sugar. He is a self-made man and is a straight-talking individual. I’m sure it would be entertaining to get his view on the world.
5) What are your three favourite songs?
I’m afraid most of my favourite music is older than I am so it would have to be Hi Ho Silver Lining by Jeff Beck, Crocodile Rock by Elton John and Band on The Run by Paul McCartney & Wings.
6) What is your most memorable meeting?
Before working for The Hyde Group I was a property finder responsible for buying properties and sites for independent investors and developers. In this role, I was acting for a developer who wanted to buy a small commercial premises as part of a larger redevelopment. Myself and a colleague had agreed to meet the owner on-site and were about to enter the shop to introduce ourselves when we realised the premises was in the middle of being burgled! We made a hasty retreat and phoned the police who, to our relief, turned up very promptly to arrest the people inside!
