Council to CPO cinema site

Ealing Council has confirmed that it will push ahead with plans to apply for a compulsory purchase order (CPO) for the site of the former Empire Cinema in Uxbridge Road.
Back in July its cabinet agreed to apply an order to speed up the redevelopment of the site with a new cinema complex, if Empire Cinemas did not provide evidence that work would soon commence.
This week council leader Julian Bell said that in the absence of such evidence, lawyers have now been instructed to seek a CPO allowing the council to acquire the land from the company.
“We have stated that we expect to see a construction contract in place to consider that work has commenced,” he said.
“No evidence of this has been provided by Empire and the site is as derelict now as it was in 2008 when they demolished the old cinema.
“We’ve been very patient with them but enough is enough.”
July’s cabinet resolution over the site also called for potential new developers to be sought, and the council said this week that “strong interest from several major developers” had been received.
It said that under any agreement, the selected developer would be required to meet all costs associated with buying the land.
Councillor Bell added: “After months of repeatedly calling Empire to move the project forward we have seen no evidence of their intention to do so.
"We will now progress without them, apply for the compulsory purchase order, select a new developer and move a step closer to the new cinema we have all been waiting for.”
